Recently, Toji Temple's flea market has become very popular among foreign tourists.

Toji's signature event is the Kobo-ichi (Kobo Market) held every month on the 21st. This traditional festival dates back to around 1239 in the Kamakura period, named after the monthly memorial day of Kobo Daishi Kukai (his passing on March 21 in the old calendar).

⬇︎Delicate bamboo crafts depicting insects such as dragonflies.It moves as it sways in the wind.It's popular with foreign tourists.

The entire temple grounds host over 1,000 stalls (often 800–1,200 or more), offering a huge variety of items: antiques, vintage goods, second-hand clothing and kimonos, tableware, miscellaneous items, plants, food, and street eats. It's one of Kansai's largest flea markets, drawing more than 200,000 visitors each month.

Toji is the head temple of the Shingon sect and a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto." In spring, the scenery of the five-story pagoda framed by cherry blossoms is stunning.

⬇︎I recommend buying kimonos at a flea market because they're very cheap!

Founded in 796, the vast grounds feature numerous National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties.

The highlight is Japan's tallest wooden structure, the five-story pagoda (about 55 meters high). Destroyed by lightning four times, it was rebuilt in the Edo period with a donation from Tokugawa Iemitsu and remains a Kyoto landmark.

⬇︎Fuyu persimmons originated in Gifu Prefecture and boast the highest domestic production volume, earning them the title of "King of Sweet Persimmons.

Hours are roughly 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM (some stalls close around 4:00 PM or when sold out), with free entry. Held rain or shine.

Toji blends history, esoteric Buddhist art, and seasonal beauty (especially cherry blossoms in spring and illuminated autumn foliage). Super convenient access: 15-minute walk from Kyoto Station's Hachijo Exit or 6 minutes from Kintetsu Toji Station.
